Background Maca is grown in the Andean Mountains of Peru at altitudes from 11,000-14,500 feet in an area of winds, sun and cold. Maca has begun to be noticed because so many athletes have been using Maca to increase their energy levels, stamina and endurance. Maca is a tonic and seems to rejuvenate the endocrine system. Its greatest effect appears to be on the sex hormones. Maca energizes and rejuvenates the glands and so increases fertility. Maca has been used for that purpose for both animals and humans. In 1961, Dr. Gloria Chacon de Popovici published a research paper that reported increased fertility in animals using Maca. So Why am I using it? Maca, with its calcium, phosphorus, vitamins B1 and B12, and its fatty acids, works beneficially on my nervous system by nourishing and calming the nerves Phosphorus is a primary building block in the cell. It has vitamin B1 that helps my body's cells convert carbohydrates into energy. It has B2 that helps my body’s growth and red cell production. Maca has the essential vitamins and minerals with nutritive properties that help me. For examples, copper, which maca has, helps in the formation of hemoglobin. There is also zinc, phosphorus as mentioned earlier and iron, which I need to correct the anemia that comes with multiple myeloma. Also maca contains minerals which help with the production of antibodies. Maca has a higher concentration of calcium than milk does; needed for the formation of bones and teeth: the state of my bones are a special concern for me with multiple myeloma.
